A locked iron safe. A letter from a missing scientist. Whatever is inside has been sealed away for a reason.

A letter arrives from a scientist who has gone missing. He has left behind a safe — a device of extraordinary complexity — and a lens that reveals what the naked eye cannot. The letter says the safe contains something he found, something ancient, something that should not exist. The answer is inside. You need only find a way in.

The Room is a tactile puzzle game built around the physical manipulation of an ornate, layered mechanical safe. Each surface conceals a mechanism; each mechanism, when solved, reveals another layer beneath. A special lens shows hidden symbols, patterns and clues invisible to the unaided eye. The experience is intimate and focused — a single object filling the screen, demanding observation, patience and the willingness to examine everything from every angle. The atmosphere is dark and Lovecraftian, the sound design meticulous, and the sense of discovery when a hidden compartment clicks open is deeply satisfying. Developed by a team of ex-Criterion Games artists in Guildford, the game began as an iPad exclusive in 2012, won Apple iPad Game of the Year and the BAFTA for Best British Game, and was eventually rebuilt from scratch for PC with the Epilogue DLC already included.
